Do you experience persistent, sometimes alternating, constipation and diarrhea? Do you feel extreme abdominal pain before and during bowel movement? If your answer is yes, you might be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS.

One out of 25 Americans is suffering from IBS. Do not worry because it is not fatal or life-threatening. It is not really considered a disease because no pathogenic (virus or bacteria) causes are known. However, it may greatly affect your work and lifestyle. There is no real way to cure it, but there are diet techniques that can alleviate the symptoms. The first step is to know the IBS trigger foods.

Next, fats and several oils can modify the composition of the stool – making the absorptivity of water from the bowel difficult. In most cases, oily foods result in diarrhea-predominant IBS, aka. “IBS-D.” Oily foods include peanuts, mayonnaise, butter and cooking oil. For food preparation, look for substitutes like margarine and canola oil.

Notice that the mentioned IBS trigger foods are also high with saturated fat. Cut down the intake of deep-fried foods and fast food. Do not eat preserved and processed products like canned goods and junk foods. It will also help to avoid excessive food flavorings and spices like pepper and chili. Salt in particular can induce dehydration in the body and the change of stool consistency.

Depending on the fiber content, a fruit, vegetable or grain can be one of the IBS trigger foods. Insoluble fibers are generally not bad but, if too much of them are ingested, they will spell trouble for you. High insoluble fiber foods include cucumber, popcorn, seeds, granola, pineapple, celery and sprouts. Always take less insoluble fibers than soluble fibers. It is also recommended to cook them first before serving.

Perhaps, the tricky part about IBS is that it is a single condition with two manifestations: constipation and diarrhea. IBS trigger foods may vary per individual, as well as the choice of foods that can stop the pain. For some people, a slight increase in fiber intake can induce diarrhea. Others will have constipation problems once dietary fiber is reduced. Trial-and-error is the best method for finding the right foods and combinations. Remember that you don’t have to pressure yourself and quickly change your meals. Take it slowly by gradually introducing yourself to new diets.

If you are familiar with this scenario and it happens to you often, you might be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS.  IBS causes sudden alteration of bowel movement, and it is accompanied with abdominal pain, bloating and discomfort. But don’t fret. You can deal with its symptoms with an IBS diet plan.

You may be wondering, why are you feeling the other symptoms but, instead of loose bowel, you feel constipated? Basically, there are three types of IBS: constipation predominant, diarrhea-predominant and alternating stool pattern. The latter exhibits irregular shifts between loose and difficult bowel movement. There is a similar IBS diet plan for all three types. Of course, supplements and medicines are different for diarrhea and constipated people.

Food Selection

Food fibers are the core of recovery meals for IBS patients. Studies show that increase in soluble fiber intake can lessen the symptoms of the syndrome. For breakfast, you can take a bowl of high fiber-cereal. You can choose from weetbix and muesli. You can also take porridge with a slice of fresh fruit. Since dairy products must be avoided, you must look for alternative protein sources. You can take soya milk which is calcium-enhanced. You can also drink non-fat milk.

In an IBS diet plan, lean meat is the best protein source. During lunch, you can have tinned fish or lean beef, with low fat cheese as side-dish. It is advised not to drink caffeinated beverages like soda and concentrated tea. Diluted fruit juice and water will do. For dessert, you can take low-fat yogurt.

Finally, for dinner, you can eat grilled or steamed chicken, which is flavored with lemon juice and pepper. Just avoid excessive spicing and flavoring. Serve it with vegetable salad. If you are intolerant of fresh vegetables, you can steam or broil them. Whole meal bread and boiled potatoes are good side-dishes for supper.

Important Tips

Do not quickly force yourself to ingest soluble fiber-rich foods in just one day. This may just worsen the condition. The IBS diet plan should be introduced slowly, and must be part of the person’s lifestyle. Also, even if you feel bloated, do not skip meals. The key in dealing with the syndrome is like the ideal way to lose weight: eat small but frequent meals and divide your nutritional requirements evenly.

do is panic. It is one of the most common diseases among Americans, equally affecting young
and old adults alike. Technically, it is not a disease because it is not yet proven to be caused by
viruses or bacteria. However, it may greatly affect your performance at home, work and school.
You must know that most cases are caused by food intolerance. Knowledge of insoluble and
soluble fiber foods is important in combating the symptoms of IBS.

Dietary Fibers and IBS 101

Dietary fiber is an organic material which is found from plant foods. When you eat them,
they are not digested and absorbed by the body. Instead, they are excreted with the stool. Fibers
from soluble fiber foods readily mix with water, and they form a gel to mix with food. This
helps regulate the speed of digestive process. On the other hand, insoluble fiber remains largely
intact as it passes through the digestive tract. Now, why is this differentiation significant? For
people with IBS, the change in symptoms is a matter of regulating fiber intake.

The syndrome’s symptoms have three tendencies: diarrhea predominant (IBS-D or very
loose bowel), constipation predominant (IBS-C or very hard stool) and alternate (IBS-A or
intermediate). For the first two cases, changes in fiber intake can greatly alleviate the symptoms.
For example, if you are constipated, you can slightly increase intake of insoluble fiber foods to
soften it. On the other hand, soluble fiber foods harden the stool by slowing down digestion.

Food Types and Target Fiber Intake

Flax seed, oat bran, dried peas and beans, apples, carrots and psyllium husks are rich with
soluble fibers. Wheat bran, corn bran, seeds, nuts and green leafy vegetables are rich with
insoluble fibers.

According to the US Institute of Medicine (IOM), men between 20-50 years old must take
38 grams of fiber everyday. Women from the same age group must take at least 25 grams. The
recommended daily intake slightly decreases for older adults. However, current statistics show
that Americans eat 5-14 grams of fiber everyday. If you belong in this group, you are prone to
IBS.

In more than half of IBS cases, increased intake of insoluble and soluble fiber foods
corrects both IBS-D and IBS-C problems. But for some people, fiber can worsen their diarrhea.
Dieticians propose high-fiber, low residue foods to stop diarrhea and promote fibrous intake at
the same time. The diet includes applesauce, tapioca, cream of rice, grated apples minus the skin,
and avocado.

Important Reminders

Recent studies have shown that the increased intake of soluble fiber can weaken the
abdominal pain in IBS. While intake of insoluble fibers increase the risks of pain. However,
you should not completely remove insoluble fibers from your meals. The technique here is to
eat soluble fiber foods first before non-soluble fibers. This will prepare the digestive system
and prevent intestinal spasms. Lastly, you can consult your doctor for natural fiber supplements,
